Judy E. Davidson, 2009 Distinguished Alumni Award

posted 10/29/08

Judy Davidson
Upon the recommendation of the College of Health and Human Services, the San Diego State University Alumni Association has selected Judy E. Davidson, DNP, RN, CCRN, FCCM, as the 2009 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, also known as the Monty, for the College. Dr. Davidson has promoted a vision for collaborative practice and research in San Diego to support care for critically ill patients and their families. Her 25 years in the field of critical care nursing has been a source of pride for the SDSU School of Nursing, in part because she is so admired by her nurse colleagues.

Dr. Davidson has a national reputation in the area of critical care nursing. She served on a national advisory group to establish clinical practice guidelines for family presence in critical care. She is a Fellow in the American College of Critical Care and has received numerous awards for her contributions to this field of nursing. Dr. Davidson also works as an adjunct clinical faculty member in the SDSU School of Nursing, teaching students in the Clinical Nurse Specialist Master’s in Nursing Track. Dr. Davidson has published extensively in leading medical and nursing journals. Dr. Davidson has also lectured extensively to critical care nursing organizations on a national level.

One of Dr. Davidson’s most important contributions to nursing has been in the area of family centered care. In addition to her leadership role in development of the national guideline for family centered care, Society of Critical Care Medicine family web site and family brochures, her new mid-range theory, Facilitated Sensemaking, will be published this year in Critical Care Nurse. The theory provides a prescriptive approach to nursing the family of a critically ill patient. The goal of Facilitated Sensemaking is to minimize the adverse psychological outcomes (anxiety, depression and/or post-traumatic stress) that can occur as a response to critical illness.

Our College is extremely proud of Dr. Davidson's many contributions to nursing science and is pleased that she has been selected for this prestigious award.
