 Krishnammal Jagannathan |
The College of Health and Human Services is delighted to announce the first in a series of lectures on issues in health and human services.
On November 5, 2008, the campus is honored to host Krishnammal Jagannathan, humanitarian extraordinaire, and 2008 recipient of both the Opus Prize and the Right Livelihood Award. She has dedicated her life to the mission of liberating Dalit ("untouchable") women and their families from their misery and servile bondage to the landlords in the Tanjore area, the traditional rice bowl of Tamil Nadu. Jagannthan has worked tirelessly to assist impoverished families with livelihood by abolishing landlessness and bringing humanity and dignity to their lives.
Following an introduction that captures the life work of Krishnammal Jagannathan, including her meetings with Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., and her life work with the women and children of India, Krishnammal will be available to dialogue and answer questions about important issues such as human rights, social justice, and giving back in a global world.
