Announcement - New Undergraduate Major in Public Health

School Expands its Undergraduate Degree Offerings

At a time when an estimated four million California residents live in areas underserved by health care professionals, the school is proud to announce a new degree program that will ultimately bring more students into public health-related fields. After many years of offering a bachelor's in Health Science with an emphasis in Community Health Education, the undergraduate program is offering a new degree program with a Public Health emphasis beginning in the fall of 2006.

This expansion will not only appeal to a diverse student body but will also open more doors for its graduates, as it offers coursework in all of the major areas of public health. The degree comes at a time when related health issues-flu pandemic, ethnic health disparities and more-are gaining public interest. Approximately 50 students will be admitted into the program for its first semester.

"Undergraduate students nationally are waking up to the importance of these issues and are demanding this education," says Rob Seidman, associate director of the school.

Graduates from the program can, among other options, work for health organizations, pursue additional graduate work or become a doctor, dentist, physical therapist or other health professional. It is also the goal of the program to see increased numbers of undergraduate students from many disciplines across campus participate in public health courses.
