Message from the Development Office
"Over a three year period, I gave away half of what I had. To be honest, my hands shook as I signed it away. I knew I was taking myself out of the race to be the richest man in the world."
- Ted Turner
In discussing his personal philanthropy, Ted Turner was speaking to one of the greatest joys of mankind: making a difference.
The spirit of this message has been transformative in the College of Health & Human Services, as philanthropy has revolutionized our programs at all levels. This change is evident in so many ways: the Singh Endowed Professorship in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, made possible through the generosity of anonymous donors, will allow us to recruit a renowned expert in that field to join our faculty and teach our students. The George & Ruth A. Warwick Scholarship, funded by Ruth, helps us to recruit the finest nursing students and ensure that they have the resources necessary to complete this rigorous degree program. The Maria Sardiņas Behavioral Health Institute, established with donations from alumni and friends, will house activities that affirm Maria's lifetime commitment to the adult mentally ill by improving the quality and effectiveness of services available to this significantly under-served population.
However, philanthropy comes in all shapes and sizes. Donors who are able to give $25, $500 or $1,000 have also transformed the college in critical ways. For example, every year Professor David Engstrom takes graduate social work students to Thailand for a hands-on international internship experience; all of the school directors are able to meet special needs such as student travel to professional conferences; faculty are able to hire research assistants to provide those students invaluable hands-on experience in a research setting--all of these experiences are possible only through the annual donations of friends like you.
In the College of Health & Human Services, we have the pleasure of working with sincere and thoughtful donors who invest in higher education, health and wellbeing and our community at large. We hope that you, our alumni and friends, will join with them to continue this exciting momentum and maintain our tradition of excellence.
We can all be philanthropists and make a difference with what we have-it's not necessary to have Ted Turner's wealth to do so. Your gift can touch a student's life, enable ground-breaking research that services our community and support community-based projects at all levels. After all, it is Teddy Roosevelt who spoke to the majority of us when he said,
Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
Corrections: The College of Health & Human Services strives to recognize all of our supporters, and would like to correct three omissions from the 2004/2005 Donor Honor Roll. We thank Patricia Libby for her support at the $1,000 to $2,499 level, Michael Eichler for his support at the $500 to $999 level and The Pfizer Foundation, Inc., for its matching gift support at the $100 to $499 level.
