Letter from the Dean
Dear friends,
Each semester, we search for the most interesting and intriguing news and updates to feature in your newsletter, The Pulse. As we gathered the stories for this edition, some common themes emerged: our curricula is expanding and providing better opportunities for our students who are San Diego's future leaders; our research and outreach programs are addressing society's challenges with innovative solutions; and, our faculty and alumni are among some of the best-respected in their respective fields of expertise.
An equally important commonality among the activities occurring within the college and campus-wide is philanthropy. As you peruse this edition of The Pulse, you will learn about the generosity of Sheila Lipinsky, this year's recipient of the Monty for Outstanding Alumni from the College of Health & Human Services. Sheila has helped to transform this campus and, in doing so, has touched innumerable students' lives. We have significantly increased the number of nurses who graduate from San Diego State University (SDSU) each year through a successful, ongoing partnership with San Diego hospital community. The Nurses Now Initiative was our response to a critical community need for highly qualified caregivers. What's more, even our students are making their mark through philanthropy; for example, the Social Work Student Social Action Committee created a fundraising event, with all proceeds going to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
In these ways, and so many others, the generosity of our friends and alumni makes a tangible, critical difference at SDSU. Our students' educations and lives are deeply enriched and enhanced by your involvement and support. This is why I have made philanthropy a college wide priority: philanthropy is absolutely essential if the college is to meet the challenges and shape the future of our collective public health and wellbeing.
Our alumni and friends play a vital role in this future through their giving of time, talent and treasure. We are always exploring new ways to increase your engagement with the college, such as inviting you to Aztec sporting events, lecture series, receptions, SDSU month activities and other college-related events. Schools are forming new alumni chapters and strengthening existing chapters to provide networking, professional development and social opportunities. And, I encourage you to visit the campus soon to see the changes that have been made since you were last here.
The college's current and future roles in enhancing the quality of life in the San Diego community rests with our ability to create meaningful partnerships and collaborations with members of that community. I invite you to be an active participant in shaping our future. To learn about what you can do, please call our Development Office at 619-594-8700. We look forward to hearing from you!
Warmest wishes,
Marilyn Newhoff
