Honoring Dr. Sue
|
Dr. Sue's impact on SDSU is still felt today
|
Vivacious, tenacious and charming - these are just a few words that have been used to describe Dr. Sue Earnest, lovingly referred to at San Diego State University (SDSU) and throughout the community as "Dr. Sue".
Dr. Sue made an immense impact at SDSU by creating what is now the School of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, an internationally recognized educational and research program. During her 26-year tenure at SDSU, Dr. Sue served as chair of the department for 18 of those years.
On September 19, 2007, the College of Health and Human Services celebrated Dr. Sue's 100th birthday at the University House. This exciting occasion was hosted by President Stephen Weber and nearly 100 former colleagues, friends and family from around the nation were in attendance.
Dr. Sue earned an M.A. degree from San Diego State College (SDSC), now SDSU, in 1938 and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1947. That same year, she began her illustrious career at SDSC. Dr. Sue went on to co-found the Children's Speech Clinic at SDSC and establish the adult Speech and Language Clinic, now the SDSU Communications Clinic, offering diagnosis, treatment and appropriate referrals to all age clients. As another pivotal moment in her career, Dr. Sue collaborated with the Naval Reserve Officer's Wives Club, the United States Navy, and the regional medical community to create the Balboa Naval Hospital Speech and Language Clinic.
Dr. Sue participated in many of SDSU's traditions. In 1988, she was awarded a Monty as one of SDSU's Distinguished Alumni. She worked tirelessly with SDSU's Mortar Board National Honor Society and served as an adviser to the SDSU Cap and Gown Chapter of Mortar Board. She has been active in the SDSU Alumni Association, once serving as president, and then as honorary board member. Additionally, Dr. Sue was president of SDSU's Friends of the Library. She even commissioned the statue of Dr. Samuel T. Black, SDSU's first president, which is located in front of the Administration Building.
Sadly, Dr. Sue passed away in November 2007. Dr. Sue enriched the lives of thousands of SDSU students and faculty members, as well as San Diego community members. And her legacy will continue to be honored with the Dr. Sue Earnest Endowed Scholarship. If you would like to contribute to her named scholarship, please contact (619) 594-2868 or make checks payable to the Campanile Foundation in care of Stephanie Scollo College of Health and Human Services, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA 92812-8045.
