1970s
Bernie Michels, 1974, SSW
Professional Achievement: Bernie Michels has been named to the Wall of Honor at the San Diego LGBT Community Center for his role in founding the center, for this academic research, and for his liberation leadership during the 1970s, a time when lesbians and gay men were still looked upon as pariahs. Some of the work for which he was honored was completed during his SDSU internship. Bernie went on to earn a PHD from Brandeis University in 1987, and he is an adjunct professor of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
1980s
Claudia Dunaway, SLHS
Professional Achievement: Claudia Dunaway received the Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Contribution in Schools at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention in November 2007. Claudia was honored for creating and sustaining 10 unique school service delivery programs with special recognition for two evidence-based models: the San Diego Analysis Research Project and SALT Lab; and the Articulation Resource Center and Speech Improvement Class. Converting research into practice, Dunaway's replicable models have revolutionized speech-language assessment and intervention in the eighth largest school system in the nation.

Professional and Personal Achievements: Employed at the California Institute of Technology for almost 12 years. I have two children, Michaela and Sydney, ages 10 and six. I like to keep in good health with yoga practice and enjoy traveling with family and friends.

Christine Ristuccia, 1991, SLHS
Professional Achievement: Christine Ristuccia was recently selected as one of "40 Under 40" by the Savannah Business Report and Journal (Savannah, GA) for her efforts as the founder and president of Say It Right. Say It Right is a publisher of speech-language pathology and special education products. Christine was recognized for her creation of The Entire World of R, a unique method of correction /r/ articulation errors, as well as her support volunteering in Chatham County Schools.

Career News: Sampling Branch Manager and Partner in the Western Regional Office of Advantage Environmental Consultants. Projects our firm completes include soil and groundwater contamination studies, human health risk assessments, Phase I/II ESAs, Biological assessments (sensitive flora and fauna) and hazardous waste management to growing the offices local presence and will speak with SDSU grads or students anytime!
