Previously competitors in nationally recognized healthcare design firms, Stichler and Hamilton realized that the evidence-based design approach was critical for the design of safe, efficient and hospitable healthcare environments. Although healthcare executives and designers have opinions about the potential effect of design features on patient and provider outcomes, there was no single source of published research to guide multi-million dollar facility decisions or that could be translated into design guidelines. Given that more than $200 billion of healthcare construction is expected by the year 2015, the need for these types of studies has never been more apparent. Since today's designs have the potential to affect healthcare delivery and nursing practice for the next 30-50 years, both Stichler and Hamilton felt the need for an evidence-based approach to healthcare design. The Institute of Medicine, the Institute of Health Improvement and the Joint Commission for Hospital Accreditation Organization have strongly recommended an interdisciplinary design approach to ensure that newly constructed hospitals support safety, efficiency and healing environments for professional providers and patients. Supporting these recommendations, HERD Journal is the first interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal with a mission to enhance the knowledge and practice of evidence-based healthcare design through the dissemination of research findings, discussion of issues and trends in healthcare, and the translation of research to practice guidelines. As co-editors, Dr. Stichler and Professor Hamilton demonstrated a commitment to the interdisciplinary design process by assembling an Editorial Advisory Board with national and international leaders in nursing, medicine, healthcare administration, architecture, engineering, interiors, graphics, environmental and behavioral psychology, neurosciences, systems and organizational effectiveness, art, music, and other complementary fields.
Dr. Stichler is the Chair for SDSU's Nursing Leadership in Health Systems Concentration and teaches several graduate courses for the School of Nursing. Her research trajectory focuses on the effect of the healthcare work environment (physical setting and leadership milieu) on organizational performance and the human experience. Currently, she is the PI on several projects. In addition to her research efforts, Dr. Stichler has a regularly featured column in the Journal of Nursing Administration focused on preparing nurse executives for an informed and active voice in healthcare design and a column, On Leadership, for the Journal of Nursing for Women's Health.
