The School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences offers coursework for introductory, intermediate, and advanced study of ASL.

Students at SDSU may enroll in ASL courses to satisfy the Foreign Language requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts and sciences. The ASL courses also satisfy the Humanities General Education requirements for the Bachelor's Degree.

Facts:

• American Sign Language (ASL) is the fastest growing "foreign" language in the US. There are estimates of 500,000 - 2,000,000 speakers in the US alone.

• More than 400 students enrolled in ASL classes in the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences during the Fall and Spring semesters this year.

• SDSU has excellent visual communication facilities including labs equipped with sophisticated digital video equipment and computers.

• ASL instructors at SDSU are active in the Deaf community and are knowledgeable about Deaf culture.
