MSW Summer Internship Program in Thailand

Now in its seventh year and with over 63 alumni, the MSW Internship Program in Thailand places students in internships in Bangkok, Thailand, for six weeks during the summer. The program is a joint venture with the Faculty of Social Administration at Thammasat University, one of the largest and oldest social work programs in Southeast Asia. Students' intern five days a week at a wide array of government and non-governmental human service organizations and are supervised by English-speaking Thai social workers.

In their internships, students are exposed to different approaches to social work and social welfare than are found in the United States. The program features several study trips to augment student learning. In the past, students have visited Wat Phra Baht Nam Phu (a temple providing hospice care to people living with AIDS), Khoa Lak and other communities devastated by the 2005 tsunami, and social development programs for Hill Tribes in the Chiang Mai region.

Students consistently state that the program is life changing. The internship is a three-credit course, most often used by students as one of the three graduate electives in the MSW program of study.

MSW Semester Program in Thailand

The School of Social Work is pleased to announce a focus area in international social work beginning in the Fall Semester 2009 that will prepare advanced practitioners to work in international social work.  Based in Bangkok, Thailand, students will spend their Spring Semester in residence at the Faculty of Social Administration at Thammasat University (FSA/TU), one of the most established schools of social work in Asia.  Students will learn community development as an intervention method, have a block field placement, and complete a thesis focusing on international issues.  This opportunity is available to MSW students who chose their advanced practice specialization in the administrative/macro concentration and is offered in the Spring Semester of the second year of study.
