March 21, 2018 – “Life after Sports: Concepts and Contexts of Athlete Transition”

March 14, 2018

Sports in American Society, an SDSU-based series of public lectures made possible through the President’s Leadership Foundation, will host Life after Sports: Concepts and Contexts in Athlete Transition.

On Wednesday March 21st, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Fowler Athletics Center at SDSU (5302 55th Ave, San Diego), several researchers and retired professional athletes will offer short lectures on why some athletes transition out of sport with ease while others struggle with emotional trauma. Following the lectures, a panel of local retired professional athletes (several of them members of their sport’s Hall of Fame) will field questions from the audience. The lectures are free and open to the public. No sign-ups are required though attendance is expected to be high. A beverage service will follow in the Aztec Hall of Fame foyer.

The speakers include SDSU School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences lecturer and triathlon Hall of Fame member, Dr. Scott Tinley, Professor of Sport Psychology and performance consultant, Dr. Simon Marshall, 8-time Ironman World Triathlon Champion and entrepreneur, Paula Newby-Fraser, and Nico Marcolongo, USMC vet, semi-pro basketball player, and Senior Manager of Operation Rebound for the Challenged Athlete’s Foundation. Each will discuss their experiences, research, ideas and concepts about mental health and life transition for the athlete. It is generally agreed by the group that concepts, contexts, and models of sport retirement transcend to other significant life transitions such as the empty-nested matriarch and the soldier returning from theaters of war. These and many other ideas will be presented and discussed.
