HHS 350 – Japan

Want to visit the island of Japan and see its neon-lit skyscrapers, anime shops, beautiful cherry trees, and the Imperial Palace? Apply in the Japan section of HHS 350 and experience it firsthand!


HHS 350, Japan section, is a 3-unit course that fulfills the CHHS International Experience Requirement, SDSU GE Explorations Area B (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Cultural Diversity, and includes a 8-day international experience in Tokyo, Japan!

Lectures from SDSU faculty during the semester-long, ONLINE course will include the following topics:

  • historical aspects of international health and human services
  • economic development and health and social science
  • nutrition in a developing country
  • globalization, health, and HIV/AIDS


  • ONLINE course throughout Spring 2018 semester
  • Students must attend 3 mandatory, in-person, pre-departure meetings on the SDSU campus:
    • Online meeting in October, date TBD
    • Friday, February 16, 1:00-2:30pm
    • Friday, March 9, 1:00-2:30pm 
  • 8-day international field experience:
    • Sunday, March 25, 2018 through Sunday, April 1, 2018 (NOTE: most students will depart San Diego on Friday, March 23, 2018)

Housing & Meals

Students will be staying at a capsule hotel. The beds are layered into the wall like “pods” or “capsules” in a spaceship. They typically have Japanese style baths, lockers, and other amenities. Accommodations similar to A welcome lunch and farewell dinner is included.


3 units of SDSU resident credit.  This course satisfies SDSU’s GE Explorations Area B (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Cultural Diversity and CHHS International Experience requirements


Program Fee: $1,630.00 (fee was based on enrollment of at least 30 students)

  • Program fee includes accommodation, some meals, in-country transportation, and activities
  • Program fee excludes SDSU tuition, mandatory international health insurance (approximately $60), airfare, and personal expenses

Non-refundable program fee due in full in order to hold your space in the class.

NOTE: Program fee payment can be made in Cash, Check or Debit ONLY! Credit cards not accepted at the Cashier’s window
