HHS 350 – Spain

madrid spain photoWould you like to explore a vibrant European city with royal palaces, pristine parks, and world-famous art museums? Register in the Spain section of HHS 350 and travel to Madrid to experience it first hand!

HHS 350, Spain section, is a 3-unit course that fulfills the CHHS International Experience Requirement, SDSU GE Explorations Area B (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Cultural Diversity, and includes a 9-day international experience in Madrid, Spain!

Lectures from SDSU faculty during the semester-long, ONLINE course will include the following topics:

  • historical aspects of international health and human services
  • economic development and health and social science
  • nutrition in a developing country
  • globalization, health, and HIV/AIDS


  • ONLINE course throughout Spring 2017 semester
  • Students must attend 3 mandatory, in-person pre-departure meetings on the SDSU campus:
    • Friday, February 3, 2017, 12-1:30 pm
    • Friday, February 24, 2017, 12-1:30 pm
    • Friday March 10, 2017, 12-1:30 pm
  • 9-day international field experience: Saturday, March 25, 2017 through Sunday, April 2, 2017 (Note: Students will depart San Diego on Friday, March 24, 2017)

Field Experience

9-day field experience in Madrid, Spain. Spring 2017 itinerary coming soon! Activities include:

  • Academic Visits: Public and Private Health Clinics, Non-profit Health Organization
  • Guest Lectures: Health Systems in Spain, Current Health Issues in Madrid
  • Panoramic City Tour of Madrid
  • Guided tour of El Prado
  • Flamenco Show & Dinner
  • Day trip to Toledo
  • Farewell Dinner & Cooking Class

Spring 2017 Itinerary

Housing & Meals

Students will be housed with families in Madrid (shared rooms), including 3 meals per day. We will also have Group Welcome and Farewell Meals


3 units of SDSU resident credit.  This course satisfies SDSU’s GE Explorations Area B (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Cultural Diversity and CHHS International Experience requirements


Estimated program fee: $1,550 based on enrollment of 25 students or more

  • Program fee includes accommodation, some meals, in-country transportation, and activities
  • Program fee excludes SDSU tuition, mandatory international health insurance (approximately $60), airfare, and personal expenses

Non-refundable program fee due in full by January 18, 2017 in order to hold your space in the class. 

NOTE: Program fee payment can be made in Cash, Check or Debit ONLY! Credit cards not accepted at the Cashier’s window

  • Majors outside of CHHS are not eligible to enroll in this program.
