Young-Shin Lee, awarded NIH-CMS grant for minority older adult research
Young-Shin Lee, PhD, RN, associate professor in the School of Nursing, recently received an NIH grant of $237,500 through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Lee's project is titled "Determining Factors Associated with Loss of Independence Among Ethnic Minority Older Adults: A 10-year Longitudinal Study Using NHATS (National Health and Aging Trends Study.)
The two-year pilot study will contribute to a 10-year national study on aging conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Specifically, Lee aims to pinpoint primary risk factors such as mobility, transportation, isolation, and other determinants that lead to loss of independence among older adults, especially in ethnic minority groups.
“By building an evidence-based foundation, I hope to contribute valuable insights for future research and implementation, particularly to aid underserved minority populations within the greater San Diego region,” said Lee.
Working in collaboration with Hee-Jin Jun, adjunct professor in the School of Public Health, the team will collect new information and utilizes nationally representative samples from Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 and older.
“As a social and behavioral epidemiologist specializing in population health and health disparities, Dr. Jun’s knowledge is invaluable,” said Lee.
Based on the findings from the pilot study, Lee's team plans to further develop community-based research programs for older adults in San Diego County.
