SDSU Magazine Spring Issue Highlights CHHS Community Impact Research

How do you commemorate a big moment? You create an entire issue around it—and that’s exactly what “SDSU Magazine” did to celebrate SDSU’s recent Research 1 (R1) status. In collaboration with “Engage + Innovate,” the Division of Research and Innovation’s annual magazine, the spring issue is packed with stories about the incredible SDSU researchers who are studying everything from wildfire prevention to human beginnings in South Africa.
The College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) is featured in the inspiring photo essay Listening in the Dark a visual story highlighting the work of Dr. Laura Coco, audiologist and professor in SDSU’s School of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and her team on the Day of the Farmworker.
At midnight, people start lining up for the Día del Campesino, aka the Day of the Farmworker. The annual celebration and health fair offers workers access to essential screenings, and Coco is there to offer hearing exams and study hearing hazards for the farmworkers.
Dr. Emily Schmied, associate professor in the School of Public Health (’06, ’08, 15’) is also featured in the R1- Aztecs in Research Alumni segment that highlights her incredible pathway from SDSU student to SDSU professor, and her research focus in promoting mental health and preventing suicide among military service members.
